The price lines to ask for

A grave is rarely one number. Ask every office for the same lines, together, so the answers compare:

• The plot itself — and whether a second, adjoining grave can be held for a spouse.
• Opening and closing — the day-of charge, and whether Sunday, holiday or winter burials cost more.
• Perpetual care — a one-time fund contribution or an annual fee, and who maintains the grounds.
• The monument and its setting — often a separate vendor; ask what the cemetery permits and charges to set it.
• What membership changes — many cemeteries sell to members of a congregation or society at one price and to others at another, or not at all.
• Whether the price is fixed once paid — and what a payment plan looks like.
